Valdis is essentially home to a parasitic enity called the Void, a creature which warped her angelic magic into death and chaos magic. Though originally an angel, her soul was shattered which enabled the Void to enter and corrupt what she had been, turning her into a Hellhound. However, the Void is hiding her memories of being an angel and she can't access them. But I'll bet if Leo and her ever got to a good place ICly, then he might be able to get to them. The Void would object, probably violently, but the option is there.
In addition, Valdis is unique among Hellhounds for the fact that her soul was restored to her, which gave her a sense of morality and returned her ability to feel emotion.
